Mishap on Railway Bridges in Scotland; Two Workers Killed

According to recent reports, a fall from a railway bridge killed two workers in separate incidents in Scotland. The workers were carrying out painting and blasting responsibilities. Both the deaths occurred in a time span of a few hours.

The victims were identified as Robert McDonald and David Rodger. McDonald, a painter employed with the Forth Bridge painting team, fell from a ladder about 150 feet high. Rodger also succumbed to injuries sustained in a precipitous fall from a height.

The UCATT Regional Secretary for Scotland, Harry Frew, expressed concern over the risks faced by those employed in the construction industry. He reiterated that safety should be one of the prime considerations in this industry.

The Network Rail Scotland route director David Simpson empathized with the families of the two dead workers and said that the co-workers were deeply saddened with news of the deaths on the Forth and Tay Bridges. He stated that such unfortunate incidents had been successfully controlled in the past years owing to stringent safety measures at these locations. Simpson also assured that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accidents has already been initiated and that every effort would be taken to prevent recurrence of such mishaps.

Ian Prosser, the Director of Railway Safety in the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), sympathized with the families of the two dead workers, and confirmed that an inquiry into the Forth bridge accident has been initiated already, while they were seeking more information into the cause of the accident on Tay Bridge. Prosser hoped that the investigations being carried out would give them an insight into how the accidents occurred, so that they could take immediate safety measures to avert further mishaps of this nature.
