Three Upgrades Services but States Limitations of Speed
3 recently revealed that it has already upgraded nearly 40 percent of its existing network to 7.2Mbps. However, the company has made it clear that the improvement does not mean customers will actually get speeds of 7.2Mbps. It says the aim of its network upgrade is to make internet accessible to more people. While customers may get speeds ‘up to’ 7.2Mbps, 3 pointed out that access to higher speeds will be restricted to people within good network coverage and faster dongles.
However, this does not mean the upgrade will not benefit the customers at all. While the technical standard of 7.2Mbps should not be taken as the actual speed, the improved network will ensure more people have easy access to internet, with speeds in the range of 1 to 2Mbps.
Thus, unlike many other mobile broadband providers, 3 is not trying to misrepresent its broadband speed to attract more customers. While the company has advertised the improvement in network speed, it is clearly saying the real speeds would be lesser. 3’s primary aim is to ensure that more and more people have internet at homes and offices to mail and browse. It has clearly said its network may not support applications requiring high bandwidth or fast data speeds.
3 has been very realistic in its approach, unlike other mobile broadband companies which dupe customers with high advertised speeds that never materialise.
